Every year one of my very best friends Heather and I make a trip to Italy. This past year, we spent our time in Cefalu, a city Northern Sicily, and holy wah, did we have an amazing time! Cefalu is known for its cathedral, a beautiful 12th-century fortress-like structure with mosaics dating back to the Byzantine Empire. The Mandralisca Museum is also a Cefalu claim to fame, home to archaeological exhibits and a Antonello da Messina portrait. Rich in history, beauty, and the most amazing cuisine ever (foreshadowing!), I was pinching myself the whole trip because it just didn’t seem real.
Heather has the coolest job, as the product manager (Italy division) for European tour operator Rick Steves. So basically, I had my own personal best friend tour guide, and it was amazing. The usual laughter-filled time we have together was amplified by our atmosphere. We stayed in an incredible little flat with a balcony overlooking the ocean. Every night was fresh buffalo mozzarella, bread, and prosciutto from the shop downstairs for dinner, followed by Aperol spritz. While we’re on the topic of food: hands down the best and freshest seafood I’ve ever had. Nothing is better than authentic Italian food!
Our days were spent exploring the city. We hiked La Rocca, a beautiful mountain climb which ends with a unreal overhead view of the city and ocean. Relaxing on the coastline, we practiced our mermaid/beach bum moves. Pretty sure we could take it to professional level these days! During our travels, I made sure to commit every single sight, sound, and taste to memory. Whenever I’m missing Italia, I summon Cefalu in my mind.
Sea salt hair, sun-kissed shoulders, and my best friend by my side? The best way to be! This trip is an experience I will never forget. I can’t wait until our next Italian adventure.
Follow along for more life abroad, work, style, and, of course, lots of fun. #juniperjamesphotography
